Cloudflare Is Quietly Becoming a Major Domain Registrar

ICANN’s April 2026 .com data puts Cloudflare above 3.05 million .com domains. That places a company better known for DNS and security firmly inside the registrar market-share conversation.

Ech’s short answer

Cloudflare is now a top-15 .com registrar

On an individual-accreditation basis, ICANN’s April 2026 data places Cloudflare 13th by .com domains under management. Its .com portfolio is 72.8% larger than it was in April 2025.

  • 13th by .com domains
  • 72.8% year-over-year growth
  • 33,290 inbound transfers

Cloudflare is best known for DNS, security and its global network. Its registrar business is now reaching a scale that deserves attention in its own right.

Part 01

The April data puts Cloudflare at 3,050,637 .com domains

ICANN’s April transaction file shows Cloudflare’s current .com portfolio, monthly adds and transfer activity.

  • Total .com domains 3,050,637 domains under Cloudflare’s registrar accreditation at the end of April 2026.
  • April adds 192,580 .com adds across registration terms reported in the April transaction file.
  • Month-on-month base growth Up 202,960 .com domains from 2,847,677 at the end of March 2026.
  • Transfer activity 33,290 successful gaining transfers versus 1,874 successful losing transfers in April.

On an individual-accreditation basis, the April file places Cloudflare 13th by total .com domains. Industry league tables can shift slightly when multiple registrar accreditations are grouped into corporate families, but Cloudflare itself operates here under a single main accreditation, IANA ID 1910.

Its April adds were also higher than March’s 184,245. That is a relatively small month-on-month increase of about 4.5%, but it came while several much larger registrar businesses remained well ahead on total portfolio size. Cloudflare is still far smaller than GoDaddy; the story is the rate at which the gap to the next tier of registrars is narrowing.

Part 02

Cloudflare added 1.29 million .com domains in a year

Cloudflare has added roughly 1.29 million .com domains in twelve months, taking its April portfolio about 73% above the same month in 2025.

ICANN’s April 2025 transaction file listed Cloudflare with 1,765,507 .com domains. Twelve months later, that figure was 3,050,637 — an increase of 1,285,130 domains, or approximately 72.8%.

The longer trend points the same way. Domain Name Wire’s July 2024 ranking had Cloudflare at about 1.27 million .com domains and 18th place after grouping major registrar families. By February 2026 the official total had reached 2.66 million, before crossing three million in April.

  • July 2024

About 1.27 million .com domains and outside the top fifteen in Domain Name Wire’s expanded ranking.

  • April 2025

1,765,507 .com domains in the official ICANN transaction data.

  • February 2026

2,656,669 .com domains, with more than one million net portfolio growth year over year.

  • April 2026

3,050,637 .com domains, breaking the three-million threshold.

Why use .com for the comparison?

.com is only one extension, so it does not represent a registrar’s entire customer base. It is useful because ICANN publishes detailed, registrar-level monthly transaction data for the namespace and the scale makes changes easier to compare over time.

Part 03

At-cost pricing gives Cloudflare a clear point of difference

Cloudflare does not build its registrar proposition around a cheap first year followed by a larger renewal margin. It says it passes registry and ICANN costs through without adding a registrar markup.

For domain owners with larger portfolios, predictable renewal costs can matter more than a discounted first year. Cloudflare says its Registrar service charges the wholesale registry price, includes redacted WHOIS information by default and offers DNSSEC without an additional registrar fee.

The company also supports more than 400 top-level domains, so the registrar is no longer a narrow .com-only product. For customers already using Cloudflare DNS, CDN or security services, keeping the registration layer in the same account can reduce the number of providers involved in managing a domain.

  • Registry-cost pricing with no Cloudflare markup
  • Redacted WHOIS information by default where supported
  • DNSSEC available inside the same Cloudflare account
  • More than 400 supported top-level domains
There is a trade-off

Domains bought through Cloudflare Registrar must use Cloudflare nameservers while they remain at the registrar. Cloudflare’s current documentation also says Registrar does not support internationalized domain names. Those restrictions matter for owners who need external authoritative DNS or Unicode domains.

Part 04

Cloudflare is putting pressure on the traditional registrar model

Cloudflare is still far from the biggest registrar groups, but its at-cost model gives customers a very different benchmark for registration and renewal pricing.

GoDaddy’s main accreditation alone still held more than 49 million .com domains in the April file, so Cloudflare remains much smaller. What has changed is that Cloudflare now has enough scale to sit beside established registrar brands in market-share discussions.

For customers, the comparison is straightforward: Cloudflare ties its registrar price to registry and ICANN costs instead of adding its own markup. The nameserver requirement means it will not suit every domain owner, but it gives price-conscious customers a clear alternative.

Registration also feeds naturally into Cloudflare’s DNS and security products. In April 2026 the company launched a Registrar API beta that can search for domains, check availability and register names programmatically, giving developers a route that does not depend on using the dashboard for every registration.

What to watch next

The next few ICANN reports will show whether Cloudflare can sustain this pace after crossing three million .com domains. The most useful signals will be monthly adds, successful inbound transfers and the year-over-year change in total domains under management.

  • Can Cloudflare keep adding around 180,000–200,000 .com domains per month?
  • Will transfer-in activity remain materially higher than transfer-out activity?
  • Does the Registrar API become a meaningful source of programmatic registrations?

In brief

Cloudflare now belongs in serious registrar comparisons

Cloudflare still trails the largest registrar groups by a wide margin, but it now has enough scale to matter. Its mix of at-cost pricing, integrated DNS and developer tooling gives domain owners a distinct alternative to the traditional registrar model.
