NameSilo review

NameSilo is still very much a domain registrar first. Free privacy, bulk tools, a marketplace, a public API and sensible security controls make it especially useful once you own more than a couple of domains. The prices are decent rather than unbeatable, but the lack of checkout clutter and the amount of domain-management functionality help make up for that.

Review verdict

A strong choice for people who manage domains properly

NameSilo has more depth than its fairly plain presentation suggests. It is easy enough for one domain, but the real value shows up when you start using bulk search, transfers, portfolio tools, the marketplace or the API.

Our view

I think NameSilo makes more sense for a domain owner than for someone who just wants the prettiest dashboard. The account gives you free privacy, bulk tools, domain history, account funds, sub-accounts, an API and a real marketplace without constantly pushing unrelated products. Support is available 24/7 as well. The main thing I would compare is price, because some registrars are cheaper on the extensions in our current dataset. DNSSEC also takes an extra step because the default NameSilo nameservers do not currently sign zones.

Best for

Portfolio owners, developers, resellers and anyone who wants strong domain-management tools without paying for basic privacy or security extras.

Not ideal for

People choosing purely on the lowest possible registration price or anyone who wants DNSSEC directly on the registrar's default nameservers.

What stands out

The combination of free privacy, Domain Defender, bulk tools, a marketplace and a public API is unusually complete.

Biggest drawback

Pricing is competitive rather than exceptional, and DNSSEC requires third-party authoritative DNS.

What I like about NameSilo

  • WHOIS privacy is free on supported domains and enabled by default, so there is no separate privacy renewal to remember.
  • Bulk search and transfer tools handle up to 500 domains at a time, which is useful once you are managing a real portfolio rather than one or two names.
  • The marketplace is built into the same account and supports auctions, buy-now listings, offers, payment plans and custom for-sale landing pages.
  • The public API, Domain Defender, 2FA, domain history and portfolio tools give more experienced users plenty of control without charging for basic access.

What I would watch

  • The current `.com`, `.org` and `.net` prices are reasonable, but not the lowest among the registrars we track.
  • NameSilo's default DNSOWL nameservers do not currently support DNSSEC signing, so you need third-party DNS if DNSSEC matters to you.
  • WHOIS privacy cannot be used on every extension because some registries restrict or prohibit proxy privacy.
  • The account exposes a lot of portfolio and management options, which is useful once you know what you are doing but can feel busier than a stripped-back registrar.

NameSilo domain prices

Registration, renewal and transfer prices

NameSilo appears on our current `.com`, `.org` and `.net` comparison sheets. It is not in the current `.co.uk` or `.ai` sheets, so I have left those extensions out rather than filling them with older prices.

NameSilo registration, renewal and transfer prices for three current extensions
ExtensionRegistrationRenewalTransfer inPricing note
.com comparison →$13.95First year$13.95Standard renewal$10.40Transfer priceThe simple part is the renewal: it matches registration, while the transfer is cheaper.
.org comparison →$9.49First year$10.79Standard renewal$10.79Transfer price`.org` is the strongest price here, with only a small increase at renewal.
.net comparison →$15.95First year$15.95Standard renewal$11.35Transfer priceRegistration and renewal match, and transferring in is noticeably cheaper.
No big renewal jump on `.com`

The current `.com` registration and renewal prices are both $13.95, so the long-term cost is easier to judge than at registrars built around deep first-year discounts.

`.org` is the better deal

$9.49 to register and $10.79 to renew is competitive enough without depending on a one-year teaser price.

Transfers are cheaper

The current transfer price is below registration and renewal for both `.com` and `.net`.

Domain features

This is where NameSilo earns its score

The feature set is much stronger than the plain-looking account suggests. Free privacy and security cover the basics, while bulk tools, a marketplace, API access, sub-accounts and portfolio controls make NameSilo useful well beyond a single-domain setup.

01

Free WHOIS privacy

PrivacyGuardian protection is free on supported extensions and is enabled by default unless you turn it off.

02

Domain Defender

The free security layer can require extra verification for domain changes and send notifications when sensitive actions are requested.

03

Bulk management

Search and transfer tools can handle up to 500 domains at once, with additional portfolio controls inside the Domain Manager.

04

Marketplace

Domains can be sold by auction, buy now or offer and counter-offer, with optional payment plans and custom landing pages.

05

Public API

The API covers registration, renewals, transfers, DNS, privacy and other common domain-management jobs.

06

24/7 support

Live chat is available around the clock, with tickets and email used when an issue needs deeper investigation.

The marketplace is genuinely useful

NameSilo's marketplace is not just a basic listing page. Sellers can use auctions, buy-now prices, offers, payment plans and custom for-sale landers without leaving the registrar account.

The published commission is 7.5%, with no listing fee or minimum commission. That is low enough to be relevant if you regularly sell domains rather than listing one name every few years.

DNSSEC still needs outside DNS

NameSilo lets you add the DS records needed for DNSSEC, but its default DNSOWL nameservers do not currently sign zones.

If DNSSEC matters, you need a compatible third-party DNS provider, enable signing there and then add the generated DS values at NameSilo. It works, but I would rather see the default nameservers handle the whole process.

Compare before choosing

Strong tools, but compare the price first

NameSilo is one of the better choices if portfolio tools matter. If your priority is simply the lowest current price or a cleaner beginner interface, I would compare it with these higher-ranked registrars.
