Part 04 Why agent-to-agent domain purchasing could matter for the wider market
Domain acquisition has traditionally been one of the points where an automated
business-building workflow still needs a conventional account and checkout. Atom is
trying to make that step machine-readable and machine-payable too.
Stripe and Tempo launched MPP on 18 March 2026 as an open standard for machine
payments. The wider idea is that software should be able to purchase a service or
resource through the same request-response cycle it already uses to interact with an
API, instead of relying on a human-oriented checkout page.
Applying that model to domains is notable because a domain is often needed very early
in the creation of a business or product. An agent that can generate a concept, build
software and deploy infrastructure can now, at least within Atom’s ecosystem, also
search for and acquire the web identity attached to that project.
For the aftermarket, this creates a new discovery path. Rather than a human visiting
a landing page or marketplace and browsing names, a software agent can query inventory
at the moment it needs a brand. If agent-led company creation grows, domain sellers may
increasingly care about how well their names surface in semantic, machine-readable
discovery systems as well as in traditional marketplace search.
- Domains become infrastructure
A domain can be acquired inside the same automated workflow used to create and deploy a project.
- Discovery changes
Agents query inventory according to a task, meaning relevance and semantic fit may matter more than browsing behaviour.
- Payments become machine-native
MPP lets the authorised agent satisfy a payment request programmatically instead of opening a standard checkout page.
Card payments are the live Atom payment method today Atom says its current MPP implementation uses card payments through Stripe Shared
Payment Tokens. MPP itself is designed to support multiple payment methods and
settlement rails, including stablecoins, so Atom could use additional rails through
the same general protocol as support expands.
