Why .SI Domain Registrations Jumped More Than 15% in September

Slovenia’s .si namespace has surged after Donald Trump began promoting “super intelligence” as a new name for artificial intelligence. Registrations accelerated around his 22 September UN speech, pushing the ccTLD from roughly 190,000 domains early in the month to about 219,000 by 28 September.

Ech’s short answer

“Super Intelligence” suddenly gave .si a second meaning

.si is Slovenia’s country-code domain, but the letters now also match SI, the abbreviation being used for “super intelligence”. That overlap triggered a wave of registrations and investor speculation: the namespace grew from about 190,000 to 219,000 domains during September.

  • More than 15% September growth
  • 4,311 registrations in one 24-hour period
  • Investor activity is a major driver

Slovenia’s .si domain has become one of the domain market’s most unexpected AI-related stories of 2026. The trigger was not a registry relaunch or a new domain extension. It was a change in language.

On 22 September, President Donald Trump told the United Nations that the US government would refer to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence”. The abbreviation SI immediately overlaps with Slovenia’s existing .si country-code top-level domain.

Domain buyers had already begun reacting to Trump’s social-media polls about alternative names for AI several days earlier. After the UN speech, registration activity accelerated sharply, with .si adding more domains in some 24-hour periods than it had added during the whole of August.

.si is still Slovenia’s country-code domain

Nothing about the technical purpose of .si has changed. The AI connection is based on the letters “SI” matching “super intelligence”. Whether that shorthand becomes widely adopted outside US government messaging remains uncertain.

Part 01

The numbers behind the .si registration spike

The change is large enough to stand out even before considering the AI story: roughly 29,000 domains were added between early and late September.

Domain Name Wire reported that an archived Register.si count showed about 190,000 registered .si domains on 4 September. By 28 September, the namespace had reached roughly 219,000 domains. That works out to growth of more than 15% during the month.

The pace became particularly striking after the UN speech. At about 10:30am Pacific Time on 28 September, Register.si was showing 4,311 registrations in the previous 24 hours. For comparison, only 3,515 .si domains were registered during all of August.

Slovenia’s registry also confirmed that .si passed the 200,000-domain milestone amid the surge and said its systems continued operating normally despite the unusually high number of requests.

  • About 219,000

Total .si registrations reported on 28 September.

  • 3,515 in August

The entire previous month recorded fewer registrations than some single days after the speech.

Part 02

Why “super intelligence” suddenly made .si relevant to AI

The domain extension itself did not change. What changed was the meaning people started attaching to its two letters.

.si is the country-code top-level domain for Slovenia. It has existed for years as a national namespace, but “SI” also happens to be a natural abbreviation for super intelligence.

Trump began discussing alternatives to the term “artificial intelligence” on social media on 19 September. Then, during his 22 September UN address, he said the US would refer to AI as “Super Intelligence”. The White House subsequently highlighted that wording in its own summary of the speech.

That created an immediate domain-market narrative: if “SI” ever becomes a widely recognised shorthand for advanced AI, a short domain ending in .si could potentially read in the same way that .ai domains currently signal an artificial-intelligence connection.

The trend started before the UN speech

Netcraft’s registration data indicates that the increase began around the time of Trump’s earlier social-media polling, suggesting that some buyers were positioning for a possible “SI” rebrand before the speech confirmed the wording.

Part 03

Domain investors appear to be driving much of the .si rush

The registration data points to substantial speculative buying rather than thousands of new AI companies suddenly launching on .si.

Netcraft found that registrations were heavily concentrated at Dynadot during the early surge. Of the .si domains it detected as registered there between Trump’s 19 September poll and his 22 September speech, about 52% were already listed on Dynadot’s aftermarket when Netcraft checked on 23 September.

That pattern matters because aftermarket listings are consistent with investors buying names for resale. It does not prove every registration was speculative, but it suggests that domain investors are a major part of the current demand.

The investor interest did not begin this week. Earlier in 2026, Domain Name Wire reviewed public .si sales and found that most of the recorded buyers were domain investors, with only a small number of obvious end-user purchases.

  • Short AI-style branding. A name such as agent.si can visually connect a keyword with “SI”.
  • Open registration. .si registration is not restricted to Slovenian residents or companies.
  • Lower entry cost than .ai. Register.si charges registrars a €10 wholesale registration fee.
  • Aftermarket speculation. A large share of the early Dynadot registrations observed by Netcraft were already for sale.
  • Existing investor interest. .si sales activity had already been drawing domain investors earlier in 2026.
  • Scarcity of strong keywords. The best short terms can disappear quickly when a new naming trend emerges.
Speculation is not the same as end-user adoption

A domain extension becomes sustainably valuable when businesses and users actually build on it. A registration surge can create short-term scarcity without guaranteeing long-term demand or resale value.

Part 04

Can .si keep growing — and could it become the next .ai?

The registration spike is real. The harder question is whether “SI” becomes common enough to support lasting demand outside the domain-investor market.

.ai became valuable because artificial intelligence became a mainstream term and real technology companies adopted the extension. .si would need a similar end-user story for the current rush to turn into a durable shift rather than a speculative burst.

For now, the strongest evidence is registration activity. Netcraft reported that .si registrations overtook .ai registrations during the 25 hours after the UN speech, while Register.si has confirmed a broader increase in demand and the namespace’s move beyond 200,000 domains.

There are also brand-protection implications. Netcraft noted that a .si domain can be a one-keystroke typo of a matching .ai domain on a QWERTY keyboard, and a rush for AI-related names increases the possibility of cybersquatting or confusing lookalike domains.

Register.si has advised owners of brands, slogans and company names that do not yet hold the matching .si domain to consider registering it. The registry says registrations are available through roughly 90 domestic and international registrars rather than directly through Register.si.

  1. Watch real website launches End-user adoption will matter more than the number of parked or for-sale domains.
  2. Watch the “SI” terminology Broader use of “super intelligence” as an AI label would strengthen the domain narrative.
  3. Watch aftermarket sales Completed sales to genuine businesses would be stronger evidence of durable demand.
  4. Watch brand protection Companies with important .ai or brand domains may increasingly review matching .si registrations.
What the surge means for Slovenia’s registry

Register.si says the wholesale registration price is €10 per domain. Domain Name Wire estimated that September’s additional registrations represented roughly €300,000 in extra wholesale registration revenue — meaningful, but far below the scale of revenue Anguilla has generated from .ai.

Bottom line

.si has a real registration boom — but its long-term AI value is still unproven

The numbers are difficult to ignore: .si grew by more than 15% during September, hit roughly 219,000 registrations and recorded more new domains in a single 24-hour period than in all of August. The trigger appears to be the sudden “super intelligence” narrative, amplified by domain investors. Whether .si becomes a lasting AI-focused extension will depend on what happens next: mainstream use of “SI”, real businesses adopting the domains and completed aftermarket sales to end users.
